Why Mitt is running

Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72

This quotation is from Fear and Loathing: On the Campaign Trail ’72 by Hunter S. Thompson. When I saw it, I said to myself that may be why Mitt will say and do almost anything to be elected. His father, George Romney, lost the 1968 nomination to Richard Nixon because George had offended the Goldwater wing of the GOP in 1964. Mitt is taking pains this year not to lose the support of the GOP base.

“A career politician finally smelling the White House is not much different from a bull moose in the rut. He will stop at nothing, trashing anything that gets in his way; and anything he can’t handle personally he will hire out–or, failing that, make a deal. It is a difficult syndrome for most people to understand, because few of us ever come close to the kind of Ultimate Power and Achievement that the White House represents to a career politician.

“The presidency is as far as he can go. There is no more. The currency of politics is power, and once you’ve been the Most Powerful Man in the World for four years, everything else is downhill–except four more years on the same trip.”

When the phone rings in the White House at 3:00 am, who do you want there to answer it?  Barack Obama who got Osama bin Laden, or Mitt Romney who whimpers about the opposition using Chicago style politics to defeat him. Which candidate is capable of dealing with foreign allies and foreign adversaries including Chavez and Putin?

Clueless

Clueless, the board game is very popular on some conservative websites. I haven’t played it myself, but this is how I think it is played. It is a two or more player game on a game board representing the White House. The object of the game is to discover who is helping Barack Obama destroy the Constitution, which room in the White House the crime is committed, the method–rope, revolver, lead pipe, recess appointment, signing statement etc., and the name(s) of his accomplice(s). Suspects include members of the judiciary, cabinet members and various czars. Clueless makes a great gift for the 1% in your life.

Was Abraham Lincoln gay? We know that he read Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman, who was a gay poet. Gays read poetry, real men do not. No one ever saw the two men meet, bur they both lived in Washington during the Civil War and sometimes could be seen acknowledging each other during walks on the streets near the White House. What went on between the two men outside of public view? Whitman wrote an emotional poem about Lincoln after his assassination called O Captain, My Captain. Was Lincoln’s marriage a real

marriage?  Were Lincoln’s children adopted?

Only three assertions above are true: Lincoln read Whitman and nodded to him on the street, Whitman was gay and Whitman wrote the poem, O Captain, My Captain. The rest is all vile speculation. This resembles the speculation and tissue of lies that Barack’s critics produce on a daily basis. I have read perhaps a dozen books by critics of Barack Obama by people who appear on radio and TV, and/or write newspaper columns and books. All of them offer opinion, sometimes on the slimmest of evidence, as truth. Then that opinion takes on a life of its own as it is repeated over and over again. The BIG LIE technique. Repeat something so often that some will accept it as fact.

As this election season shifts into higher gear, websites critical of the President are popping up like mushrooms. Some seem to exist only to repeat messages that originate elsewhere, on other blogs or in the form of YouTube videos. False information is being propagated widely and feverishly. There is much work to be done by the Barack Obama Truth Team.

Gas prices part 2

I would like President Obama to release or threaten to release a portion of the strategic petroleum reserve to scare some of the speculators out of the petroleum futures market. If they lose their confidence that prices have nowhere to go but up, they may be more cautious in the future. And that will force the price of gas down.

As I wrote in a previous post Gas prices, the long-term solution, beside green energy, is more competition among the oil companies which now form a cartel. Teddy Roosevelt tried to bust the oil cartel in 1911 by breaking Standard Oil into several smaller companies. However, that victory was largely ineffective because the several parts of Standard Oil continued to collude with one another, and even maintained their main offices in the same building for a time. Breaking up the oil giants will be difficult, but it is a mandatory goal for Barack’s second term.

In the short-term, we can get relief from high gas prices if our government regulators police the speculators more closely and if prohibitive taxes are instituted on speculation. Additionally, some refined gas is being shipped abroad at a time when US demand is down. I would like to see a temporary ban on gasoline export whenever prices at the pump reach or exceed a certain level.

Finally, I suggest that you consider writing to the White House to express your thoughts on this matter and/or anything else you feel strongly about. Please express your thoughts in your own words; they will have more impact than repeating someone else’s words. The White House link is http://www.whitehouse.gov/contact and the form to fill in is found about 2/3 of the way down the right side of the page entitled “Submit Comments Online ” I recommend also that you send a copy of your comments to Rachel Maddow of MSNBC at rachel@msnbc.com She is fighting for us, and  she is more effective than most at calling a spade a spade.
