We Americans are suckers for the slogan “New and improved.” We take it as an article of faith that any product that is “new and improved” is better than what it replaces. Mitt is portraying himself as the “new and improved” candidate to replace the tried and true President Barack Obama. We know Barack and he has demonstrated his worth to the nation. Mitt is making a lot of promises without giving us specifics or a chance of a test drive. He does not talk about his four years as Governor of Massachusetts which is the most relevant information that voters could use to decide his fate. In the words of a Texas axiom Mitt, you’re all hat and no cattle.

In the morning news, John Boehner to terminate Fast and Furious investigation by Congress. I do not have all the facts, but my impression has been that the Fast and Furious investigation was instigated principally to embarrass Eric Holder. Perhaps there will be an impartial telling of the facts at some future date.
Also this morning, I saw an editorial cartoon showing a bumper sticker blaming the US government for supplying guns to drug cartels that are used to kill. What else are guns in criminal hands used for? Besides embarrassing the Obama administration, I think the real reason for the uproar over Fast and Furious was that the private sector, gun dealers in Texas and elsewhere, did not want government competition reducing their sales and profits.
Rick Perry today in Iowa said that he is far from perfect. That is perfectly true. He may have been referring to Picture Perfect Home Decor in Hereford, Texas, southwest of Amarillo.

The Lies of Sarah Palin, The Untold Story Behind Her Relentless Quest for Power by Geoffrey Dunn. There are several books already released or soon to be released about Sarah Palin and I chose to read this one because it was recommended by Jack Cafferty of the Situation Room on CNN. As indicated by the title, it is a largely negative account of her political career. For balance, I had already read the two books that she “authored.”
Dunn makes it clear that Sarah Palin wants to be President of the US. Whether she will be a candidate in 2012 is anyone’s guess, but she will be a candidate at some point. It is of no use to point out the misstatements that she makes because whatever Sarah says is the truth, so she and her supporters believe. Anything else is the fault of whoever questions her veracity. Sarah Palin can do no wrong.
If you questioned the voters of Alaska, you would get a different story. Many of them are glad that she is no longer governor. IF Sarah Palin were to be elected President, the choice of her vice president would be very important. I believe that President Palin would find the duties too onerous and the compensation too little and would resign during her first term. My guess is that she would select Rick Perry of Texas as her running mate, thus uniting two governors of our largest states on one ticket.

Thomas Jefferson, author of the Declaration of Independence, is in danger of being omitted from history text books in Texas because he is suspected of not being a Christian. I can see a future headline in a Texas newspaper, “Jefferson stripped of Founding Father status.” This is important because publishers of history text books prefer to print as few versions of their texts as possible to save money. What happens in Texas does not stay in Texas.
