Romney Speaks in Detroit (Photo credit: Austen Hufford)
Republicans are still discussing why Romney lost the recent election. He lost, not because he didn’t receive more votes from his base, he lost because he received fewer votes period. End of story. Republicans claim that Romney received the majority of the votes cast by real Americans. Perhaps he did if you define real Americans as those who voted for Romney. That’s a really circular argument if I have ever heard one. Rather than reforming the party, the GOP are currently trying to find ways of increasing the number of real Americans who vote and decreasing the number of votes by other Americans.

I am appalled (ap-paul-ed) that the US Congress contains both Senator Rand Paul and Representative Paul Ryan. Two Pauls don’t make a right, but they do make an extreme Right.

He’s back. Paul Ryan has come out of hiding to appear on the talk shows. He could be defined by what he is saying now or by the Ryan budget or by being the back half of the Romney/Ryan horse that lost the 2012 election horse race. However, I prefer to define him by two contrasting events that demonstrate his support for the 1% over the 99%.
- He voted against the Federal relief package for victims of hurricane Sandy.
- He was spotted dining at a posh Washington restaurant with a hedge fund billionaire where they indulged in two bottles of wine at $350.00 each.

The GOP members of Congress who style themselves as the Young Guns are Paul Ryan, Eric Cantor and Kevin McCarthy. McCarthy may be the least known of the three, but he also may be the one who does the most damage. Representing the California district that includes Bakersfield, his job is to recruit GOP Congressional candidates. Describing the qualities he is looking for, he makes it sound as though the perfect candidate is a TEA Party/ Young Guns clone. If the next Congress is as obstructive as the current one, we will have McCarthy and Elbridge Gerry’s legacy to thank. The GOP has Gerrymandered several states since the 2010 election.

According to Benjamin Disraeli, former Prime Minister of England in the late 19th century, lies could be classified as lies, damned lies or statistics. Those who use them, I would classify as liars, damned liars or scoundrels; statistics being the last refuge of scoundrels. I would put Mitt Romney in the last category, scoundrels, because of his fluent use of statistics to mislead. He continues to refuse to release his tax information, and he and Paul Ryan promote the Ryan budget without being specific about how they plan to balance the budget without the use of pixie dust. Mitt’s promises fall under the category of glittering generalities lacking any and all specificity. Can we take Romney at his word? No way.
