Malala Yousafzai, the 16-year-old Pakistani girl shot by the Taliban, met with President Obama and told him that the use of US drones in Pakistan is fueling terrorism. I agree. Good for you Malala. You may not have won the Nobel Peace Prize this year, but you are doing much good for the cause of peace.

What’s in a name?

A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.”

William Shakespeare

Ronald Reagan‘s middle name was Wilson, but no one ever criticized him for it because he was given his names when he was born and did not choose them himself. Some in the GOP strongly dislike President Woodrow Wilson since he was a liberal Democrat.

On the other hand, today President Obama is criticized for his middle name, Hussein. He was given that name by his parents, being named for his father of the same name. President Obama is correctly identified as Barack Hussein Obama II, just as John McCain is correctly identified as John Sidney McCain III and Mitt Romney as Willard Mitt Romney.

The only thing we learn when someone refers to President Obama as Barack Hussein Obama is that the speaker or writer wants to emphasize the President’s difference and is probably calling for unjustified impeachment.

Rigging the vote

Stalin said, “The people who cast the votes don’t decide an election, the people who count the votes do.”

If the GOP are willing to steal an election before votes are cast by restricting who can vote, they certainly are willing to steal an election after the votes are cast. In the last election, the companies supplying the voting machines were run by “friends of Mitt.” In Ohio, Karl Rove was certainly expecting that Mitt would carry the state. When it didn’t happen, he had his famous 20-minute meltdown on FOX. Rumour has it that Rove‘s plans were foiled by hackers supportive of President Obama. In any case, for our form of government to continue, we must ensure a fair and accurate count of the votes.

“Throw enough mud against a wall, and some of it will stick.”

That is the strategy of the Right now with President Obama and it was the strategy used against Bill Clinton when he was President. Hillary called it a vast, right-wing conspiracy and she was correct. Mud thrown at President Obama seems to stick better because he is black and because his name makes him seem foreign to some. Before the November, 2012, election, I was a member of the Barack Obama Truth Team, and I followed some of the more outspoken blogs against him. They were filled with lies and hatred. They would not listen to the truth when I tried to correct their lies.

The same lies are repeated in all the books of right-wing pundits that I have read (and I have read more than a dozen). Those pundits are a regular fixture on radio and TV. Their books don’t contain the obvious hatred to be found on the Web. In Orwell’s 1984, the Ministry of Truth presented lies as true and truth as lies. The Right now turns facts on their head, claiming lies as truth. In previous generations, this technique was known as the Big Lie.

Impeachable offense?

Congressman Dennis J. Kucinich

Yesterday, Dennis Kucinich told Sean Hannity that striking Syria without prior Congressional authorization would be an impeachable offense. Sean’s eyes lit up and his voice began to drip honey. President Obama’s GOP critics have wanted to impeach him for years and recently began vocally looking for an excuse. Syria could be that excuse. The next eighteen months could become a partisan wrangle in which nothing else is done. The 2014 elections could be contested mainly over maintaining a GOP House with sufficient votes to impeach and a GOP Senate with sufficient votes to convict, a first in American history. If that happens, Joe Biden would become President, and he would pick someone to become Vice President until January, 2017. If he chose Hillary, would the Senate vote to confirm her or would they demand that she pledge not to be a candidate in 2016?
