Food stamps

Did you know that twice as many whites as blacks receive food stamps? Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich certainly didn’t know that, or if they did, they weren’t admitting it.

“According to the census Bureau, 28 percent of those receiving food stamps are African-American and 59 percent are white. The big increase in the number of food stamp recipients was due partly to dozens of states that loosened eligibility requirements.”

Farmers live in the country and they are real Americans as opposed to people who live in cities and are dependent on entitlements like food stamps. Real American farmers and large corporate farms are people too. They deserve the $200 billion subsidies over five years that the next farm bill will authorize. Forget about the 50 million or so dependent on food stamps to survive. Out of sight, out of mind. And out of the farm bill, food stamps will still be funded, at least for a while and probably at lower amounts over the years. After all, isn’t Obama the food stamp president according to Newt Gingrich? He should know with an account at Tiffany’s. Very few of the hungry shop there.

At last

Newt Gingrich

Newt Gingrich finally did the right thing and suspended his candidacy for President of the US. He had promised to drop out, but kept postponing it until today. Newt was the clear leader in attacking the media if they dared ask a question he did not want to answer. It is a tactic of intimidation used by all the GOP, but Newt used the tactic most blatantly. The mainstream media was the liberal press. Only FOX News asked the gentle, softball questions that allowed GOP candidates to avoid any embarrassment that telling the truth would entail. Farewell Newt Gingrich. Your wild ideas and brazen attacks on the media will be missed.

Republicans and Republican’ts

I am a Republican in the long tradition that started with Lincoln and ended in 2000. Republican’ts refuse to compromise with the opposition and vow to hold the country hostage until they are returned to power. The Republican’ts include Grover Norquist, George W. Bush, Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum. One of the major questions before the voters in November will be where is Mitt. Is Mitt Romney a Republican, or is Mitt a Republican’t?

Personally, I believe that Mitt is really a Republican; he is hiding his true positions for fear that the Republican’ts will not support him and block his nomination.

Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot, and Other Observations by Al Franken. Last evening on The Last word on MSNBC, Howard Dean mentioned this book and then I remembered that I had read it a few years ago. I refreshed my memory this morning and this is what I found. The book is a satirical collection of 45 short essays on Rush and other topics: Newt Gingrich, Bob Dole, Phil Gramm, Pat Buchanan, Ross Perot and assorted other politicians. The book was published in 1996, before Franken became an US Senator.

He listed the problems facing the 99% then and they have not changed in the 16 years since the book was published.

This is a quotation from the Epilogue.

“We are all living in a wildly more complicated world than we were born into. And at the same time the trust in our institutions, in government, in family, in individuals, is eroding. And lack of trust creates fear, and fear creates anger.
I thought about how our political system appeals to the worst, not the best, in us. Not to the goodness of America…”
