Hydraulic Fracturing or fracking for short is a method to extract natural gas from shale rock by injecting water and some chemicals at high pressure deep underground. Proponents say it is safe and opponents argue that it is not safe and endangers our drinking water. I am not sure who is correct, but I don’t trust the supporters of fracking. Only time will truly tell. In the meantime, I support strict regulation of the frackers to prevent contamination of the environment by some trying to cut corners and increase profits. I am not encouraged by the fact that frackers are unwilling to disclose what chemicals they are adding to the water they use in the fracking process.

Mitt Romney and the GOP have a plan for energy independence in North America. I wonder if they bothered to consult Canada and Mexico? The Romney/GOP plan includes more drilling for oil, fracking for natural gas, more coal mining, wind, solar and nuclear power. The heart of their plan, which they don’t mention, is the conversion of our cars and trucks to burn gasoline and diesel fuel refined from snake oil.

Drilling for natural gas by means of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, is a process now banned in France and Germany. If we allow our desire for cheap energy and oil company profits to overrule our concerns for the environment, the price we will pay will be increased illness and death from the chemicals being injected into the ground plus a scarcity of pure drinking water. Humanity can survive without cheap energy, but we can live for only a few hours without drinking water.
