Longevity

In a healthcare environment, longevity is a tall can of Jevity, a diet supplement.

Everywhere else, longevity is how long you live. The GOP base is dying off, and the 1% including the Koch brothers want to keep them around for their votes as long as possible. Scientists know that some human tissues, such as the small bowel, do not grow old. Research is going on now to learn why and then apply that knowledge, possibly through gene technology, to the rest of the human body. If the Koch brothers are smart, and I am sure they are, they will use some of their vast wealth to speeding that research on human aging. Imagine the possibilities if Koch funded patents can keep GOP voters alive longer. The Koch brothers are already funding groups that are moving in the opposite direction, repealing Obamacare, to shorten the lives of the poor who presumably would vote Democratic.

Energy conservation

Rather than drill, baby, drill, our mantra should be conserve, baby, conserve. I found this interesting paragraph in Physics for Future Presidents, The Science Behind the Headlines by Richard A. Muller. He has a new book out, Energy for Future Presidents, in which he admits that global warming is mostly human caused. This is significant because he was a sceptic and because his work was partially funded by the Koch brothers. I am very much looking forward to reading that book.

“Past conservation efforts have been far more successful than many people appreciate. That’s because they have been so comfortable that people didn’t notice. Rosenfeld points out that it was conservation that liberated us from the control of the oil cartel in the 1970s. When the oil embargo began, the 4% yearly improvement in conservation in the United States allowed our economy to grow with no increase in energy use. But the members of OPEC, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, suffered from their reduced income brought about by the embargo. OPEC was more addicted to US dollars than the United States was to foreign oil. A little bit of extra conservation on our part drove down their income and forced them to increase production. That is a very important point for future presidents to know. OPEC was defeated by US conservation efforts, largely during a period when the general public was unaware that conservation progress was taking place.”

Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan are tools in the hands of Sheldon Adelson, the Koch brothers and other big-money GOP donors. A hammer and a saw have no input into how they are used; Mitt and Paul do, if they choose to express themselves. It would appear that both are content in being used to transform America into a fascist state, ruled by the rich with order maintained by a militarized police. Perhaps in their hearts, they truly believe what they are saying, but that does not mean that we must accept their falsehoods at face value

Today’s mail brought a fund-raiser letter from the President. In 2.5 pages, he made a good case for contributing to his re-election. When I was still employed in 2008, I could contribute generously and I did repeatedly. Today, I am living on Social Security and two small pensions. I cannot afford to contribute. If I had the same wealth as the Koch brothers, I would be willing to finance his campaign by myself. Alas, I cannot.

I received a letter in the mail today from President Obama asking for a generous donation. In 2008, I was employed and I made several contributions that added together were in the range that he is requesting today. Unfortunately I retired under some duress last December and I can no longer afford to contribute as generously as he and I would like. If Barack and Congress would double Social Security payments as I requested, I and millions of other retired persons could live a more comfortable life and participate more actively in politics.

Barack stated in his letter that we are not yet halfway there in his goal of returning America to prosperity. There is nothing wrong with the country; the fault lies in our dysfunctional politics. The GOP wants to defeat Barack in 2012 and will make the country suffer to achieve that goal. Barack is confident, but he admits that the 2012 election will be more difficult and more historic than the 2008 election. I will support his re-election to the maximum extent that I can. I don’t have the resources of the Koch brothers, but my vote is equal to theirs.
