Filibuster reform

Yesterday, John McCain and Harry Reid reached a compromise on filibuster reform that avoided the nuclear option. We can chalk up a win for John McCain over the Wacko-birds of the GOP in the Senate. The score now reads:
John McCain   1
Wacko-birds   0

I look forward with anticipation to the next episode in this continuing saga, perhaps to be entitled “The Wacko-birds Strike Back.”

This is the John McCain version.

The category is small countries.

The answer is bomb it.

The question is how do you solve any conflict in a small country?

On Meet the Press yesterday, John McCain advocated military action in Syria because Assad has WMDs and if he hasn’t used Sarin against his own people, John McCain knows that he will. Since McCain is opposed to boots on the ground, he supports aerial attacks in support of the rebels. Since that is what he knows and what he did in the US Navy, that is what McCain always supports.

McCain is against the atrocities in Syria. What about closer to home such as the atrocities in Aurora, Colorado and Newtown, Connecticut? McCain opposes increased gun safety. And when it comes to democracy, McCain and the GOP favor democracy abroad imposed by our military actions in Iraq and Afghanistan, but he and many members of the GOP support making democracy harder for some right here in the US.

John McCain and the rest of the GOP have discovered a new word “metrics” and will use it to demand a difficult-to-meet trigger in the immigration reform bill. They and we know how many undocumented are captured on our borders each year. Now they want to know how many cross into the US and are not caught. They will use those two numbers to calculate the capture rate, the Border Patrol’s batting average in other words. The GOP want to set the trigger for a path to citizenship as close to 100% as they can to delay the path to citizenship as long as they can. A path to citizenship will be written into the law, but it will be like the distant mirage of water in the desert on a hot summer day. Once you get close to it, it will disappear. The purpose of the GOP is to appear supportive of a path to citizenship without actually supporting a real path. They are hoping that voters won’t notice.

Chuck Hagel part 2

Chuck Hagel is President Obama’s choice for Secretary of Defense and I think that he is an excellent choice. Some GOP members of the Senate disagree. What John McCain and some others are forgetting is that the cabinet position is Secretary of Defense, not head of the War Department. The War Department became the Department of Defense in 1949. It is possible, and I argue desirable, to defense the nation in international disputes without using force in each and every case.

Earmarks are dead; long live earmarks. Earmarks have not gone away. All that has changed is that the name is now lettermarks and the fact that now the public cannot consult a government source that lists the lettermarks (earmarks) and how much they cost. John McCain should be very happy. Why isn’t he bragging about this “accomplishment’?
