Largely overlooked yesterday was the good news that Cory Booker was elected to the US Senate from New Jersey. I have been impressed with him for some time now. He tried to live on stamps for one week to see the effects. I wish all the members of Congress were required to try to do that before they vote on a reduction of food stamp benefits. Moments ago on CNN, Senator-elect Booker quoted an old saying as to how he intended to conduct himself in the Senate, “if you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”

According to John Boehner, the events happening in Washington, DC, now are “not a game.” He’s right about that; they are a tired, old movie that the GOP insist on re-running every few months. President Obama plays the part of Austin Powers while Ted Cruz is Dr. Evil, supported by a cast of villains including Utah’s own Mike Lee as Mini-Me. The ratings of the GOP drop every time the movie is run. Critics in the media divide the blame equally, but voters assign more blame to the GOP than to the Democrats. Just imagine how low the GOP ratings would fall if the media did their job and correctly assigned the blame to the GOP.

“A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.”
Ronald Reagan‘s middle name was Wilson, but no one ever criticized him for it because he was given his names when he was born and did not choose them himself. Some in the GOP strongly dislike President Woodrow Wilson since he was a liberal Democrat.
On the other hand, today President Obama is criticized for his middle name, Hussein. He was given that name by his parents, being named for his father of the same name. President Obama is correctly identified as Barack Hussein Obama II, just as John McCain is correctly identified as John Sidney McCain III and Mitt Romney as Willard Mitt Romney.
The only thing we learn when someone refers to President Obama as Barack Hussein Obama is that the speaker or writer wants to emphasize the President’s difference and is probably calling for unjustified impeachment.

Some on the left want Elizabeth Warren as the Democratic candidate in 2016, while former Senator Scott Brown would be a good choice for the GOP. That would produce a contest between two candidates from Massachusetts who contested a Senate election in 2012. Warren won that one, defeating Brown.

Mike Lee and others complain about the length of proposed laws such as immigration reform. The number of pages in a bill or law is not an indication of its quality; it is an indication of how much compromise was required to produce it. And in Washington now, compromise is not valued by some and is therefore difficult to achieve. Better and shorter bills could be written if the desire for compromise were greater.
