We took our son out to dinner yesterday to a restaurant in Ancestor Square, the very heart of Saint George where Brigham Young used to winter with some of his wives. Here in Saint George we hear nothing but scorn for the Affordable Care Act and President Obama, and Utah refused to offer expanded health care to its citizens. To my surprise and delight, I saw a parked, upscale SUV with a sticker in its rear window, I love Obamacare. So even here in the reddest state in the union, there are some supporters of the President and his signature, at least so far, accomplishment

No longer the Grand Old Party or even the Grand Opposition Party, the current GOP have degenerated into the Party of No. No matter what President Obama proposes, the GOP are against it. Not by principle, but by politics, the GOP put politics ahead of country. For example, the Affordable Care Act is based on a proposal from the right-wing Heritage Foundation and echoes Romneycare, enacted in Massachusetts while Mitt was governor. If the Affordable Care Act were Heritage Foundationcare or Romneycare, the GOP would support it. Since it is called Obamacare, they oppose it.
It is the essence of an opposition party to oppose the party in power, propose alternate solutions, and then compromise for the good of the country. The GOP no longer do that. Instead, they oppose for the sake of opposing and refuse compromise. That is why they are now the Grand Obstruction Party. The solution is fragmentation of the GOP with the rational bits and pieces re-assembling themselves into a functioning opposition party. Where are the Republicans with the courage to say “no” to obstruction?

In all the discussion about the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), some in the media, particularly at FOX, are quoting statistics about how some insurance premiums have risen 200-300%. However, they are not comparing comparable policies, apples to apples, they are comparing policies with vastly difference coverages, apples to prunes.

The scalp hunters in the GOP failed to capture President Obama’s scalp in the effort to repeal, defund, or delay the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare). Now as a consolation prize, they seek the resignation/firing of the person in charge of implementing Obamacare, Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary of Health and Human Services. If they fail again, whose scalp will they covet next?

An earlier version of the TEA Party, the American Liberty League, was born in 1934 to contest FDR’s agenda. It was crushed in the election of 1936, and died a quiet death in 1940. The TEA Party was born in 2009 to contest Obamacare (the Affordable Care Act). It reached its peak in 2010 and is in decline now. Hopefully it will be crushed in the election of 2014 and will die a quiet or raucous death in 2015. It cannot happen soon enough for me.
I think that it is ironic that opposition to Obamacare gave birth to the TEA Party and will cause its death. It is ironic because Obamacare will bring life to millions and death to the Astroturf organization created by Koch brother money.
