The first amendment to the US Constitution guarantees freedom of speech, but that right does not apply when one is on the job. Even on one own’s time, freedom of speech may be limited if an employer is free to fire you for expressing opinions that the employer does not approve of. And in today’s environment, the wealthy can limit the freedom of speech of former employees by paying hush money or by threatening to sue. The wealthy can afford heavy legal expenses while most of us cannot. It appears that Trump in the White House is continuing his previous practice of buying the silence of former mistresses and potential critics.
