Smoot-Hawley Tariff

Named for US Senator Reed Smoot and Representative Willis C. Hawley, the Smoot-Hawlet Tariff Act was signed into law on June 17, 1930 by President Herbert Hoover. Some claim that Smoot-Hawley caused the Great Depression and others say that it prolonged it. Republicans generally claim that FDR prolonged the Great Depression by his actions that tried to provide relief for those suffering the effects of the Great Depression. I wasn’t there and I have not studied the period in any detail. However, those who don’t learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Certainly Donald Trump knows nothing about the Great Depression and his tariffs threaten a repeat.

In an interesting, to me, coincidence, Smoot and Hawley both lost in the 1932 election. Both died in 1941 within months of each other. Smoot was 2 years the elder. Smoot was number 3 to lead the Mormon church at the time of his death.

Trump must go
