Millard Fillmore

Millard Fillmore, Biography of a President by Robert J. Rayback. Fillmore was the 13th President of the US serving only a partial term after the sudden death of Zachary Taylor in July, 1850. Fillmore was instrumental in delaying the start of the Civil War by a full ten years from 1850 to 1860. The delay helped ensure the victory of the North because it allowed the North ten additional years to grow stronger and more populous.
