I grew up in Illinois and I was aware of the North/South divide in my home state. Thomas Marshall, Vice President under Wilson, grew up in the neighboring state of Indiana and he remarks in his memoirs that Indiana also had a North/South divide. He attributed the divide to the southern part of the state being settled by migrants from the South and the northern part of the state by migrants from the North. So the tide of slavery flowed farther to the north than I had thought it had. Just goes to show how far-reaching the evils of slavery are in our nation’s past and present history.
