A Constitutional convention will be in our future if some in the GOP have their way. Recently I saw retired US Senator Tom Coburn advancing the call for a convention. He said that we must reset the relationship between the states and the Federal government. What he meant is that the GOP want to permanently reduce the role and size of the Federal government. I suppose that would be a return to the Articles of Confederation which preceded the Constitution and did not work. Why is it that some of the biggest supporters of the Constitution are supporters of radical change in our form of government? Ask them what we would have to give up under their proposal. I’ll bet that most Americans want to keep the programs that benefit them now and retain the Federal government at its current size.
