Paolo Bacigalupi

The Windup Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi published in 2009. A new talent in the world of science fiction that I have just encountered. This book is set in the near future in Bangkok, Thailand, when the oceans have risen, petroleum is very scarce, and genetically mutated diseases are killing humans and their food plants. The windup girl of the title is a humanoid created by the Japanese to serve in a country short of population. I heartily recommend this book and the author. I plan to read the rest of his works.
