Fracking or hydraulic fracturing is a method of recovering natural gas from shale rock by the injection of water and chemicals under pressure to the underlying rocks without strip mining. There are pollution concerns and the danger of illnesses caused by toxic chemicals. The industry says that their drilling will be safe and non-polluting. Some environmentalists are doubtful. I have not formed a firm opinion although I do share their concerns. We need the natural gas for energy and the good-paying jobs involved in the natural gas extraction. More than either though, we humans need clean drinking water, and water shortages may be in our near future.
