This a reposting of an article I originally wrote on August 15, 2011. The book is Mitt Romney in his own words and contains much information on his term of office in Massachusetts. It is too bad that he can’t or won’t discuss it now.

No Apology by Mitt Romney, published in March, 2010, is the book I was looking for in the fall of 2008 so that I could evaluate the Romney governship of Massachusetts. He is a good writer and the book is filled with the detail I require when making a political evaluation. Unfortunately, Romney seems to be on every side of every question. I do think that his opinions and experience in Massachusetts on education and healthcare are important and deserve consideration when the discussion is about improving education and healthcare. I do not agree with everything he says, but I think that his opinions and experience are valuable.

Like Tim Pawlenty in Courage to Stand, Romney wants the GOP base to select him as their candidate. Unlike Pawlenty, he offers details and his own views that occasionally conflict with the party line from the GOP and the TEA Party. This book has increased my respect for Mitt Romney. My respect for him would be even higher if he had given stronger voice to his own views and less support to what the GOP base requires in its candidates. There are even occasional words of praise for Barack Obama.

Trust and technology

It is now possible to alter any electronic recording of sound or video. The technology that makes information sharing so easy in today’s world can be used by the unscrupulous to try to mislead for financial gain. I no longer trust what I see or hear on the web or TV. It is much too easy to edit raw data to support a specific point of view. The only senses I trust are my own. I must actually be a witness at an event to fully trust what I see and hear.

I first became aware of slanted presentation when Gerald Ford was president. The liberal media was actually liberal at the time and they portrayed Ford as a physical bumbler when he actually was a skilled athlete. Every sliced golf swing or trip or stumble was reported to give the impression that they were typical of the man; they were not.

I watched neither speech, but recently both Joe Biden and Cory Booker have been portrayed negatively. Joe Biden spoke  in Ohio and commentators I trust praised his speech as very effective. On the other hand, FOX and others showed a few selected clips and then proceeded to condemn the speech. Cory Booker appeared on Meet the Press and condemned all the negative political advertising. Now his words are being used out of context by the GOP to attack the Obama campaign.

Ronald  Reagan said, “Trust but verify,” about the Soviet Union. In today’s computerized media world, vigilance is a necessity before granting trust to media reports.

Emulate Pakistan

Pakistan is one the most poorly educated nations on earth. They spend 2% of GNP on education and 30% on defense. That leaves a tremendous vacuum to be filled and the Saudis have rushed to fill it with madrassas that turn out more and more of the Taliban. We can follow the Pakistani example as advocated by the GOP, more cuts in education and more money for defense. Just follow the GOP sponsored budget in the House this summer and fall.

Republican’ts

Oldsmobile used to advertise their new cars as “not your father’s Oldsmobile.” Sadly Oldsmobile is no more. The current Republican Party is not your father’s Republican Party. Sadly that Party is no more. The party calling itself the Republican Party is really the Party of Republican’ts. Can’t govern responsibly, can’t tell the truth and can’t survive much longer.

Barack Obama Truth Team report for May 6, 2012.

Barack’s birth certificate, the Fast and Furious scandal, the Solyndra scandal, Obamacare, all these are purely distractions, invented or hyped to give the GOP reasons to attack the President which they intended to do, no matter the circumstances. The real issue this election cycle is the economy and the Republicans have done everything they can to slow the recovery. Today the voters in France and Greece will give their verdict on the austerity that the GOP wants to impose on the US. I’m betting that austerity over there will be voted out, and we don’t want it over here.

Jobs gained in the private economy are being lost in the public sector as cash-strapped states layoff thousands of employees. What this economy needs is more stimulus so that consumers feel confident enough to spend and so that they have money to spend creating demand. In normal times if the GOP were in power, they would be stimulating the economy to win election or re-election. After the election, the GOP usually induces a recession to check inflation at the insistence of the 1%. Then the 99% would suffer through the recession. If the GOP were to win in November and institute austerity, I believe that we will experience the Great Depression 2.
