Legal abortions in the US number about 1.2 million per year and that represents a decline and a leveling off at that number. The number one reason women give for an abortion is that a child would interfere with their lives and the number two reason is that they cannot afford a child. To reduce the number of abortions in the US, we should be trying to give mothers more options for placing children with parents who can afford them or increasing the incomes of mothers so that they can afford to keep their children themselves.

Social conservatives are focused like a laser on making abortions difficult to obtain or illegal, and I have long wondered why. I now have a theory that I am going to share with you. Some social conservatives may oppose abortion for religious or moral reasons, but I believe that Republicans are opposed to abortion for political reasons. The number of whites in the US is declining both relatively and absolutely compared to other racial groups. I believe that the GOP oppose abortion primarily among educated and affluent white women because that will reduce the number of future GOP voters. I can explain the GOP single-minded focus on abortion in no other way. The GOP will lose some women’s votes due to their perceived war on women, but they continue to insist on more abortion restrictions, contrary to Roe versus Wade.

The GOP Agenda for America is known in Washington by its acronym, CRAP.

“C” is for the cut, cap and balance amendment to the US Constitution that the GOP favor,

“R” is for the repeal of Obamacare and much regulation.

“A” is for the austerity they want to impose; the sequester is only a small prelude to the full program of budget cuts.

“P” is for punishment of the American people for voting Democratic; it will continue until the GOP return to power.

Barack Obama is US President number 44 and when he finishes his term in January, 2017, 44 US Presidents will have served a total of 228 years or an average of 5 years and 2 months each. There will have been only 14 presidents who have served two full terms or more. They are in order:

  1. Washington
  2. Jefferson
  3. Madison
  4. Monroe
  5. Jackson
  6. Grant
  7. Cleveland
  8. Wilson
  9. FDR
  10. Eisenhower
  11. Reagan
  12. Clinton
  13. GW Bush
  14. Obama

President Obama will be the 14th two-term President unless Grover Norquist and some Republicans have their way and impeach him for being President while black. GW Bush has the distinction of being number 13 on the list, an unlucky number for the country.

Sequester cuts

Sequester cuts are starting to be felt around the country and the GOP are trying to blame the Obama administration for the pain, beginning with White House tours and continuing today with airport delays. It is very hard for the average person to determine how and where the cuts are applied in the budgeting process, but that is one reason we have media who have the time and expertise? to dig into the details. They exist to inform, except on FOX.

This morning, I listened to a commentator say that the 2% sequester translate into a 10% cut in salary and hours for some airport and TSA personnel over the next 5 months. That will lead to some flying delays for the general public, but not for the 1% and Congress who usually fly on private jets. I saw one comment recently by an anonymous 1%-er, “Only losers fly commercial.” With that attitude common? among our leaders, we the 99% cannot expect any relief from sequestration cuts.
