George Pataki, former governor of New York for 12 years, just moments ago on MSNBC spoke about how the GOP could appeal to Hispanic voters by emphasizing the national debt and deficits. It is the current Republican BIG LIE that deficits are the overriding concern regarding the economy. Dick Cheney famously said, “deficits don’t matter.” I disagree with Cheney and his family about most things, but I agree with him that in the short to medium term, deficits do not matter. Economists that I respect and trust, including Paul Krugman, agree that in a recession, such as the one we still are in, stimulus to grow the economy is more important than reducing the national debt and reducing deficits.
