Last night at the DNC, Bill Clinton, in under an hour, demolished the structure that the GOP had built attacking Barack Obama and supporting Mitt Romney. Brick by brick, stick by stick, lie by lie and misrepresentation by misrepresentation, Bill Clinton left the Republican structure in ruin. My advice to Mitt, concede now.

The national debt is $16 trillion and the GOP are harping on that fact. Barack added $5 trillion to that amount they claim. And who entered office with a negligible national debt from Bill Clinton and added most of those dollars to it? Why it was the president whose name no Republican is willing to mention, G. W. Bush.

In order to understand the conversation in Washington, DC, it is necessary to follow the money. Taxes, who pays and how much will be the subject of the conversation at least until the election and probably afterward. Unless you understand a few facts, you will not be able to separate fact from fiction, and the GOP will be airing a lot of fiction.

Should we extend the Bush tax cuts? Should we extend the payroll tax cuts? Should we tax the rich more or less? These are all questions that we will face between now and year-end or longer. Every position will be supported by statistics. Beware of partisans bearing statistics to “prove” their position is correct. There are lies, damned lies, and statistics in order of mendacity. Statistics can be and are used to prove anything under the sun or moon.

I too am a partisan, but here are a few facts to keep in mind. Job creators don’t create jobs unless there is a demand for the product or service. Most small business owners earn less than $250,000 annually. Not by percentages, but by dollar amount, most of the Bush tax cuts go to the wealthy or very wealthy. In my opinion, they don’t need the money. Tax cuts for the poor and middle class will be spent creating demand. Tax cuts for the wealthy are saved or spent on luxury goods produced outside the US. The savings of the wealthy may be banked abroad or invested speculatively in derivatives or commodities such as petroleum, driving up prices at the pump.

Returning to the Clinton era tax rates would be a step in the right direction. The Clinton years were prosperous and at the end of Bill Clinton‘s eight years in office, the nation’s debt was paid off. Now the GOP are complaining about a $16 trillion national debt that they blame on President Obama. The truth is that the debt was caused by the Bush tax cuts, the unfunded wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the Great Recession. If we eliminate the Bush tax cuts, the national debt will soon be vastly reduced.

Third party

Some bloggers have already posted written or You Tube warnings to Ron Paul not to run as a third-party candidate. They profess fear that a Ron Paul candidacy will cost the eventual GOP nominee the election. In contrast, I am encouraging Ron Paul to run if he decides he should. Barack is going to be re-elected regardless, and a Ron Paul candidacy will be a convenient scapegoat for the GOP to blame.

Some arguers against a third-party candidate cite 1992 when Bill Clinton won with less than 50% of the vote. Others go back to 1912 when Teddy Roosevelt split the GOP vote and Taft, the incumbent, finished third behind Wilson and TR. I enjoy pointing out that the GOP was a third-party candidate in 1856 when the Whigs were a fading power. The 1860 campaign was a 4-party race. I do honestly believe that the GOP will be replaced as a major party in the near future if they do not start supporting the 99% instead of the 1%.

As Lincoln said, “You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time.

My advice to Herman

My advice to Herman Cain is to admit to whatever you did, apologize for it, and then move on. I am reading Uncovering Clinton by Michael Isikoff and Bill Clinton’s biggest mistake of his presidency was probably refusing to issue an apology to Paula Jones. Of course, he continued his dalliances with others including Monica Lewinsky, because he could not stop or would not stop. The mistake that colored his entire presidency though was his brief attempt to gratify himself with Paula Jones and then his refusal to admit the mistake. We Americans are a forgiving people. Admit your mistakes and apologize. We’ll forgive and maybe forget.
