Mitt’s charity

Mitt Romney is to be commended for his charitable giving. However, about 80% of his gifts have gone to the Mormon church. He must tithe, give 10% of his gross income, to remain a member of church in good standing. What does the church do with the money? It builds temples throughout the world and attempts to convert non-Mormons to the faith. The Mormon missionaries who come to your house and mine must pay for their own clothing and travel expenses. Mormon youth are not required to serve as missionaries, but they are encouraged to serve.

When I think of charity, I think of giving time and/or money to help someone who needs my help. I don’t think of the money collected by the Mormon church as charity in that sense. The church believes that it is helping people by converting them to the faith, but I believe that one Christian denomination is as good as another. I believe that it is a waste to try to convert people from one set of beliefs to another, whether it is to Christianity from another belief or from one denomination to another.
